This unique, hand-carved netsuke depicts a cheerful, plump male figure—most likely Hotei—who in Japanese culture is a symbol of abundance and joy. Netsuke were small, functional carvings traditionally attached to Japanese clothing, and their artistic creation flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries.
