He studied under István Réti, spent a year in Munich, and lived in Shanghai and Tokyo from 1934 to 1937, working as a candy maker and practicing as a professional boxer. Despite his adventurous life, he continued painting, exhibiting at the Ernst Museum in 1932 and the Hall of Art in 1958 and 1983.
