After completing his law studies, Elemér Vass pursued fine arts at the School of Applied Arts in Budapest. He worked as a war painter during World War I, later lived in Italy and France, and eventually became associated with the artistic circle of István Szőnyi in Zebegény before settling in Tihany after World War II.
